The emotional meaning of money
differs depending on how wealth is obtained. Research
shows that the experiences of the people who have made the
money (the founders of wealth) are quite different than those
of their heirs. For example, wealth founders may find
that what has driven their success (including dedication
to work and passionate determination to make money) is causing
pain—for themselves and their families. Those
who inherit fortunes often experience other emotions—including
ambivalent feelings about money and privilege. People
who receive a windfall face their own set of challenges as
they adapt to their newfound wealth. With identity
in transition due to this sudden change, it is not uncommon
to feel overwhelmed, insecure and isolated. |
